Job Title: Lifeguard

Position Summary:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.
Essential Job Functions:
• Communications
• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports as required
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action
• Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service training
• Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Minimum age of 15 years of age
• Certifications: Life Guarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer & First Aid preferred.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with Red Cross and YMCA standards
• High school or equivalent (Preferred)

YEP INTERNSHIPS
Watertown Family YMCA is proud to offer the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), a 6-week internship program designed to provide youth ages 14-21 years with valuable hands-on learning opportunities throughout the year. Participants gain real-world experience in a supportive, professional environment while developing important workplace and leadership skills such as communication, teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving.
Interns have the opportunity to explore career pathways, build confidence, and make meaningful connections while contributing to programs and services that strengthen our community. The YEP internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to grow personally and professionally while gaining practical experience in a mission-driven organization.
The next application period for the Youth Empowerment Program will open in Fall 2026.
